Past Excursions
Our second excursion was the TGIF Express, which was held April 17, 2026 as part of the 2026 Tuolumne Railroad Weekend. The event started in the late afternoon with a social hour (with snacks and beverages provided) and the opportunity to take thee special tours. In Tour A, Larry Jensen (who literally “wrote the books” about filming on the Sierra) led a tour of some iconic filming locations and equipment at Railtown, and seeing some recognizable movie props from the past. In Tour B, logging railroad historian Adam Weidenbach led his group to see and learn about the surprising amount logging railroads rolling stock at Railtown, including 2 shays, multiple log cars, logging tank cars, and cabooses. In Tour C, George Sapp gave a tour of the historic Roundhouse, which has been the continuous home of the Sierra Railway’s steam locomotive fleet for over 100 years. The event ended with the train ride, pulled by Sierra Railway’s historic “movie star” steam locomotive #3. The happy crowd enjoyed two round trips to Rock Siding, plus some extra milage above the Railtown 1897 shops.
Our first excursion, the Preservation Sunset Limited, was run on Friday evening, September 26, 2025. It started with a social hour, during which Patrick Karnahan and his Black Irish Band provided musical entertainment, and roundhouse tours were offered. That was followed by an excellent BBQ chicken and ribs dinner provided by Devon’s Delectables. Soft drinks, wine, and beer were available from bartender extraordinaire Cody LaPertche. Then everyone boarded the train, pulled by Sierra Railway’s historic “movie star” steam locomotive #3.
